I just read an article by Watkins and Ostenson (2015) that identified a series of factors limiting teachers' decisions in texts they use. They talked about pushback from stakeholders when they stray from the classics, identifying canon to be "safe." I have problems with this, because a lot of classics have been banned. But we'll leave that point for now. Another constraint that came up was sanctioned literature. We have a similar process that reviews texts for classroom inclusion, called ERAC: https://focusedresources.ca/en.
I decided to look at the texts I wished to suggest for inclusion, and see which are province-sanctioned.
The results were a little discouraging.
